**Grandpa’s Captain’s Chair**A captain’s chair is a unique piece of furniture. Sitting in this kind of chair is an experience to remember. Its curved low back cradles your back with comfort. The straight arm rests are at the right height and level to put your arms. Spindles are sometimes used to put your feet.People visiting a house would see a captain’s chair in the living room, the parlour, or the den. Grandpa’s captain’s chair wasn’t in the living room. It wasn’t in the parlour. It wasn’t in the den. Only a select group of people got to see the chair.Most chairs of this type are made of varnished wood. People who would go down cellar to wash up for a meal saw Grandpa’s chair. It wasn’t varnished, but it was painted a battleship grey colour. Like a battleship, it had seen many encounters with chipped paint, dings and scratches to show for it.The place of prominence was beside the furnace in the cellar. Here was where Grandpa put on his rubber boots in the winter. They were toasty warm sitting behind the furnace.I don’t recall Dad, myself or anyone else ever sitting in that particular chair.
